here's a quick tip...

usually when you use chorus, the effect is very pronounced...

try setting the "intensity" in settings pop-up to a very low level...

this thickens up the sound without having a chorusy effect...

It seems Apple made a change where you can not drag and drop a file directly from iTunes into Garageband.

Here is a simple workaround...

While in itune,, select the file and use the option, SHOW IN FINDER

then drag that file into Garageband...

Easy ;-)))

Creating great stereo tracks in Garageband hints and tips

To create a really great stereo sound from a mono track (or a dull sounding stereo track) do this!

say you have a nice acoustic guitar part.

create a duplicate track in garageband.

move a copy of acoustic guitar part to new track.

you now have 2 copies of track.

pan each hard right and hard left

put garageband into TIME view vs, MEASURES view.

now use the zoom in slider in lower left of window to zoom into the second duplicate track

now slide this track a little to the right to offset it from the first track.

listen to the 2 tracks to see the effect.

the sound should be much fuller!

slide track to create alternate delays, for fuller or more subtle effect.

also, try setting different EQ to each of the 2 tracks

the possibilities are endless!

Mastering in Garageband

Mastering in Garageband

First start by creating your song made up of many tracks in garageband. Mix the song so everything sounds good to you. Adjust levels for each track, adjust EQ for each track, adjust panning for each track, and standard effects like reverb and delay. (etc...etc..)

When you are done and the song sounds pretty damn good, export the song to itunes as an AIFF format which is a lossless file format unlike MP3...
next, create a single track garageband file, and import your AIFF file from itunes.

Now you can master this file in garageband!

Listen to the song on a couple sets of monitors/speakers from big fancy ones to little cheap boob box type... and also listen to your song in headphones. Doing this will reveal where you need to adjust EQ... and compression, etc...

Then if you really want a great soundm get the plugin called OZONE 4 (or maybe there is a newer version). This plugin makes your song sound amazing!!

Once you have done your critical listening on various speakers and headphones, you are ready to export again to itunes. Output as MP3 for ipods/iphone, etc... and as an AIFF if sending your file to a CD production facility. This is your MASTERED song!

You may not be able to make an electric guitar track after updating to GarageBand '11. This can occur if you chose a custom install option when installing a previous version of GarageBand and then relocated the instruments and loops.

To resolve this issue:

Quit GarageBand.
From the Finder, choose Home from the Go menu.
Double-click the Library folder.
Double-click the Preferences folder.
Find the file "com.apple.garageband.plist" and drag it to the trash.

Note: Performing these steps will reset any customized preferences in GarageBand to their default settings (such as the selected audio input and output device).

Paste an audio file from the clipboard

You can paste an audio file from an app that supports copying audio to the clipboard. GarageBand for iPad supports uncompressed audio files with a sample rate of 44.1 kHz and 16-bit depth (the standard for audio CDs).

Audio files copied from another app can be pasted to Audio Recorder or Guitar amp tracks.

Import an audio file

You can import an audio file from your computer into Tracks view. GarageBand for iPad supports uncompressed audio files with a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 16-bit depth (the standard for audio CDs). You can also import Apple Loops. If the audio file is an unsupported sample rate or bit depth it will be unavailable in the import window.

Use GarageBand with external output devices

You can use GarageBand with external devices, including AirPlay, Bluetooth, and HDMI-equipped media devices. When using any of these devices there is no support of audio input. This means that you cannot record sound with the Audio Recorder or Sampler, and cannot play a guitar with the Guitar Amp Touch Instrument.

After you connect an external device to your iPad, you must set GarageBand to send audio to the device.

When you are finished using GarageBand with the external device, tap the switch Off.

While the "AirPlay - Bluetooth - HDMI" switch is on, an alert appears if you try to record an Audio Recorder or Guitar Amp Touch Instrument, or if you try to record a sound with the Sampler. You can turn the switch off from the alert.

Songs from GarageBand for iPad that you opened in Logic 9.1.4 and saved as Logic projects may sound different when opened in Logic 9.1.3 or earlier.

Resolution

The best way to avoid this issue is to open projects in Logic 9.1.4 or later. To update from an earlier version of Logic 9.x:

Choose Software Update from the Apple  menu.
Install the latest version of Logic offered.

If you need to work with an affected project in an earlier version of Logic, first export any tracks using Logic 9.1.4 that use GarageBand instruments as audio files to use in the earlier version:

Click the track header to select all regions of that track.
Choose Region > Bounce Regions in Place.
Set the options as shown here:
Repeat for each GarageBand for iPad track.
Save the project.

Garageband Hints and Tips - using your Garageband preview file.

Go to preferences and tell Garageband to save a preview of your song when saving your file. This allows you to go to the finder and click the file once, and then hit space bar to preview your song. Much quicker than opening the file in Garageband! And another cool option this gives you is an AIFF file you can import right into iTunes!

Click your garageband file in finder, and right click file to show contents. This will open a new window, where there is a folder called MEDIA. Open up this folder and there is a file called OUTPUT... and this is your AIFF preview file! Drag it into iTunes and rename and you have an easy way to import all your songs into iTunes vs, opening each song in GB and outputting to iTunes (much more time!)

Garageband Mastering Hints, Tips and Techniques
One of my favorite techniques for mastering is to find a great commercial recording as an example file. I often use something like AJA from Steely Dan. This is an awesome record that is very well produced by perfectionists.
Import the song AJA (or anything you think sounds great on various sound systems from car radio's to exotic home stereo's) into garageband. Now use the visual EQ with spectrum analyzer checked so as the song plays you can see the harmonic flow in the different frequencies from 20 hz to 20K hz. Study carefully. Then export your new song and reimport into Garageband. Now use the visual eq to analyze your song. How does it compare to your reference track? is your song to bass heavy? too bass light? too much or little in the midrange frequencies? you get the idea...
Hope this works for you and your Garageband Mastering gets a bit easier...

Ipad Garageband

One of the cool features of Ipad Garageband is the keyboard which allows you to add some cool expression to your playing by selecting the PITCH keyboard mode which allows you to slide your fingers up and down the keys to change pitch! Wouldn't it be cool if a real keyboard would allow this!!

My next thing to try is importing from mac to ipad and back again to add these expressive keyboard parts to my mac garageband parts!

Mastering in Apple Garageband

Mastering in Garageband is an important task that comes at the end of creating a new song. One of my favorite techniques for getting good mastering results in Garageband is to use a multi function plugin called OZONE. I use this plug in on the master track to output my song to iTunes or to a hi resolution AIFF file. Another good technique is to output your song to an AIFF stereo file, and then create a new garageband file, and import this AIFF file. Then apply OZONE to the stereo master file and output again to your final mastered file for CD production or input into iTunes!

Using iPad Garageband Drum Editor in Mac Garageband

I LOVE the new iPad Garageband Drum Editor!! It makes it easy to create cool, unique, evolving drum beats. The Mac version of Garageband does not currently have this cool drum editor. What I do is record cool loops in iPad Garageband Drum Editor and then export to itunes, where I can then import into Mac Garageband! Make sure your loops are on a nice 8 bar or 16 bar measure boundary. And also make note of the tempo, so you can import into a new Mac Garageband file at that tempo. You can then turn into a apple loop, where tempo can change as you change song tempo!

I just looked at all my Garageband Music files and there are over 1010 pieces of music I have created since February 11 of 2004!!! Garageband is in my opinion the best music creation tool ever created for a computer... regardless of price!

Garageband Previews

Greetings Garageband Lovers!

I have hundreds, maybe thousands of songs I have written in Garageband. Opening them up in GB can take quite a while for each song, and sometimes I just want a quick listen, so that method can be a pain in the a-ss...lol. The cool thing to do in this case is to go into GB preferences, and make GB create a PREVIEW of the file! Then you can be in the mac finder and just click once on a file and hit the SPACE BAR and the mac will play the song!! Quick, instant, easy!!!

I am self taught in music and song writing... and just know enough theory to be dangerous!

One feature I like is Garagebands ability to show you what chord you are playing on the piano keyboard. I then use this to string some chords together, and actually know what I am playing... or, if I read a good article in say keyboard magazine and they do a profile on a song, and give the chord sequence, I can easily figure it out!

Greetings Garageband lovers.

Todays Garageband Hints and Tips has to do with the meter of your music and how it relates to Garageband.

I normally write my music in 4/4 time, but every once in a while, I remember there are other time signatures in music besides 4/4! and so I change it to 3/4 time or 6/8 time.

But here is the cool part! When you change time signature/time meter in Garageband, Garageband automatically shows you a different set of loops in the loop browser that are made for the time signature you are in! This means you will discover some new loops you never had in 4/4 time :) and this can often inspire a new song out of you :)

One of the "tricks" I use to create an interesting song in garageband is to have a drum track that I use to play a piano part let's say... for 3-4 bars. I then repeat this motif for 16+ bars.

I then slide the drums down 3-4 bars, so the song starts with a piano and then the drums come in for a nice dynamic transition :) You get the idea... you can use this method in many ways...

Sometimes I will create a complex mix of 8+ tracks, all sounding very magestic. I will then slide all these far to the right and pull individual tracks back one at a time so the song build with one track... then two... then three... etc...

Greeting musicians and Garageband lovers! It's is 2009 and it's going to be a great year!

I was working on a song today... and I had the urge to record 3-4 tracks in one go at it!

Well... you can do that...

If you are like me... you set up a template file that has all your favorite instruments all set up and ready to roll, so when the mood strikes you, you can quickly get your ideas into Garageband!)

Start recording.... and as you are recording, pause to hit the record button off, then select another track, and hit the record button again.... continuing to record!

I liked this, because it kept me in the flow of the recording... vs. recording a track / stopping recording / rewinding/ hitting record again... etc....

Garageband Hints and Tips: by passing count in click

here is a quick tip...

often when I am recording a long song, I was to record something a
minute or two into the song.
If I hit record, then I have to put up with the 4 click intro then
wait till I am ready to record...
One thing you can do is to hit play... then hit the record button...
This bypasses count in :)
You can also double click up on time bar to start payback a few bars
before your recording point, then hit record button.
These are simple things but can save a lot of time ;)

Garageband Hints & Tips | Creating A Cool Tremolo Effect

Here is a cool effect I used on a rocking organ in Garagebands Organ category.

Pick your favorite organ sound.

In the effects section you can pick up to 4 effects from the drop downs.

Now it is pretty normal for someone to add the TREMOLO effect once, and adjust as needed.

The trick here is to pick it again and give it a different value!! This way you get the tremolo effect working together to create a cool phase in and out effect. Experiment!! :)

Garageband Hints and Tips | Vary your song tempos!

I have a master garageband template that I call up when I am writing a new tune. It has all the instruments I normally need, and a basic drum loop and mastering settings the way I like (EQ, reverb, delay, etc)

This makes it easy for me to start a new song in an instant. A couple problems with this is I tend to write my music in the same tempo and using the same instruments. SO... the template idea is great, but make an effort to change those instruments and tempo's!

Once you have a song that you like... leave it alone for a week and then come back to it with fresh ears. At this point you can make subtle adjustments that take a good song and make it great! Like tuning the EQ... or ramping up a volume curve so an instrument is not all at the same volume... or panning tracks to get a wider stereo field... etc... etc...

This one I came across when I was making song track pitch adjustments.
If you have a large monitor like I do and your song only has a few
tracks, it can make it hard to see where your song tempo and song
pitch adjustments are in relation to the segments of your song....

Grab the resize window area at the bottom right of Garageband, and
pull it up so that the master track is right up close to your song
segments... and bingo... you can see your overall song adjustments in
the master track much easier in relationship to your song segments!

When you pull up a new garageband instrument the graphical EQ is
flat... get in there and tone down the highs and notch boost a nice
bass spectrum and roll off the super lows that are boomy... and BINGO,
you have super phat bass! Then double that bass line with another
instrument like acoustic guitar but with a really low register! makes
a great bass sound with a nice tighness!

have fun always! AND experiment!! do what is not obvious!

Garageband Hints & Tips: Listening to multiple instruments in Garageband

One of the things I miss the most in Garageband is the ability to play
multiple instruments at the same time while recording or just playing.
If you want a very layered sound, you record your piece, then make a
copy of that track and assign it a new instrument.

The problem with this approach is that when you can record something,
it is nice to play all the layered sounds together while you record,
because it effects the way you play your piece... (you know... when
you play a piano sound, you play it a certain way, because as you hear
what you're playing, you immediately change how you are playing it...
and if you are playing strings, that will be played totally differently)

Here is my workaround to make this a reality. (This assumes you have a
program like logic studio, that allows multiple instruments to be
played )
** this also assumes you like composing in garageband better than in
logic... I do... Garageband is much more "conducive" to me for
recording music.

So, open Logic, and set up your layered instruments...
open Garageband, and set up just one of the instruments above, and
record...
as you play, you will get all instruments playing, and your playing
will be based on this layered approach :)
then in Garageband, duplicate tracks and replicate the logic layered
sound and mix/balance sounds...

Garageband Hints & Tips: recording a part when you have a complicated "master pitch" key changes

I love using the master pitch function to make key changes in my
instrumental compositions. Makes the songs more interesting,
especially with my music which uses a lot of repeating motifs...

When recording a new track with all these key changes, it can be hard
to play the part with all the changes, so what I do is temporarily
turn off "master pitch" and then record my part, with no key changes,
and also, I am in my favorite key which is Em, so the parts play easy
for me (and I am not a trained keyboard musician... I just play by ear
with the playing ability I inherently have)

Ok... once your part is recorded, turn your master pitch back on and
you have a great new part, that will automatically change pitch as you
have set it up in your master track!

Garageband Tips and Help: Create an Apple Garageband Master Template File To Speed Composing!

One of the great things about Apple's Garageband is the ability to
compose songs quickly. The program doesn't get in the way of creating
music, which is why it is my favorite music creation program of all
time.

To make creating new songs on Apple's Garageband even faster, I
create a Garageband file I call master. This file is preconfigured
with a variety of instruments I use often... piano, bass, a simple
drum loop, strings, percussion, vocal, guitar, etc... and I also set
up a master track with FX set the way I like (for me, long reverb, a
slight amount of compression and visual EQ set to reduce heavy bass
from entering output)

When I want to create a new song, I pull up this master file, and am
then ready to roll instantly!

A Garageband User Needs Help

I'm loving working with Garageband, but lately the program is SUPER slow. I have done all the optimization tips, cleared space on my hard drive (I keep loops and finished songs on my external HD) and I still find that when I click on the record button, it takes up to 3 minutes for it to engage. Do you have any tips for fixing this? I'm using the ILIFE update for Garageband and I have a Macbook that's less than a year old: 1.83 GHz Intel Core / 512 MB 667 MHz. Up until the two months, this program was working like a dream.

Garageband Tip: Using many different speakers and headphones for mastering in Garageband!

You may have noticed like I have that your music sounds radically different when listened through different speakers and headphones. Make sure and listen to your music through various speaker systems and headphones. I have a high end stereo surround sound system I use, in addition to small USB speakers for near field monitoring as well as apple headphones and BOSE quiet comfort headphones and lastly listening through my AUDI A8 car stereo system!

Using all these various systems from simple low cost speakers to state-of-the-art stereo systems will let you make adjustments to your master recordings so you get "good" sound from all peoples systems. A typical issue/problem is to monitor your recording only with a state-of-the-art stereo system is you tend to crank up the bass because your system can handle it AND deliver it! But, when you listen through a small system it overloads small speaker systems.

The opposite can also be true! If you monitor your masters on a small, bass deficient speakers, then you will tend to pump up the bass, and when you listen to your mix on a bigger, full bass system, the bass will be way too heavy.

Another issue is putting a lot of stereo panning effects into your tracks, which may sound great when listening through speakers, but will sound terrible when listening with headphones, which is much more common with all the millions of Apple iPods out there :) - so give your final mix a good listen with headphones too.

Garageband Tips: Mastering Your Songs Using Apple's Garageband for CD & Online Distribution

Mastering is the art and science of creating a 2 channel stereo master that is used to create a commercial CD, or to upload to a site like Apple iTunes. This "master" is produced in such a way that it's sound quality is excellent on a variety of sound systems, from a car radio, to a state-of-the-art stereo system to an Apple iPod. Great bass (but not too heavy!), good balancing bewteen all instruments, and clean, sparkly highs.

Here is how to create great masters from within Apple Garageband.

When mastering... export your final multitrack song to itunes, then create a new garageband file and inport the stereo master. This is the file that you will "tweek" and master for final output!

Take 4-5 great commercial songs that you like the production and sound quality of, and import them into garageband. Then look at the analyzer function of the visual EQ. look to see where the audio spectrum falls...

now compare this reference song with your composition to see where your audio spectrum falls

I like to use songs by steely dan and the doobie brothers which were really well produced

load both your stereo mix, and say, AJA by steely dan... and see how the spectrum compares!

I usually find that my bass is too heavy! so I have to adjust carefully to keep a full bass sound withone having a muddy bass.

Use a parametric EQ for adjusting small areas, since a parametric will let you fine tune exactly how much of the audio spectrum you are adjusting.

As to the reference songs you pick, make sure they are of similar style of music... and an artist who is known for great audio recordings... for instance, if you were writing a new age song, listen to some tunes by a respected new age artist and producer like will ackerman.

if you write a lot of different styles of music, select various great songs that match the different styles of your songs, and import them all into your Garageband "Mastering Master" as I call mine... you can then mute all songs except the one you are using as reference and then ofcoarse your composition.

One of the tools in a composers tool box when writing music in
Garageband is to change drums so they are running in 1/2 time. Once
in a while you can find drum loops that have a half time version, but
this is rare. And the half time drum loop should "fit" with the full
time loop. Here's what you do... Create a track with your drum loop.
Create a duplicate track of the drum loop, and slide the loop
forwards or backwards creating a double time or syncopated loop!!
