GarageBand '11: Unable to create electric guitar tracks

Symptoms

You may not be able to make an electric guitar track after updating to GarageBand '11. This can occur if you chose a custom install option when installing a previous version of GarageBand and then relocated the instruments and loops.

Resolution

To resolve this issue:

  1. Quit GarageBand.
  2. From the Finder, choose Home from the Go menu.
  3. Double-click the Library folder.
  4. Double-click the Preferences folder.
  5. Find the file "com.apple.garageband.plist" and drag it to the trash.

Note: Performing these steps will reset any customized preferences in GarageBand to their default settings (such as the selected audio input and output device).

If your computer is left unused for a long period of time, you may notice the monitoring latency in GarageBand has increased.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, update to GarageBand 6.0.2 or later.

If GarageBand was included with your computer or if you installed GarageBand from a DVD:

  • Download and install GarageBand 6.0.2 or later by choosing Software Update from the Apple () menu.

If you purchased GarageBand from the Mac App Store:

  • Download and install GarageBand 6.0.2 or later from the Updates tab of the Mac App Store.
 

For earlier versions of GarageBand, try the following solutions: 

  • If you have audio hardware not manufactured by Apple, try switching the device GarageBand uses for input and output between the built-in audio and back.
  • Quit and reopen GarageBand.

Songs you create in GarageBand for iPad cannot be opened in GarageBand for Mac (version 6.0.1 or earlier). Projects you create in GarageBand for Mac also cannot be opened in GarageBand for iPad.

Use GarageBand for Mac 6.0.2 or later to open GarageBand for iPad songs. Follow the steps below to update to the latest version of GarageBand on your Mac.


If GarageBand for Mac was included with your computer, or if you installed GarageBand for Mac from a DVD:

  • Choose Software Update from the Apple () menu. Install any updates related to GarageBand.


If you purchased GarageBand for Mac from the Mac App Store:
